Unit 6: Portraiture
Unit Project: draw, using shading and detail, a portrait of yourself or someone else. You should have a reference photo (can be on your phone, from a magazine/internet, or a printed photo) with you to work during class time. Please have your photo with you ready to work on Monday, April 18th. You may go to the library to print a photo if you need it. THERE WILL BE NO EXCUSE FOR NOT BEING PREPARED TO WORK ON MONDAY. If you do not have your reference photo, one will be provided for you.
Project Guidelines:
Project Guidelines:
- Must submit two rough sketches of two different people from your reference photo (use two different people so you have one to fall back on if one becomes difficult)
- Final drawing will be done on 8 x 11" paper, provided by me once rough sketches are approved
- Only show head and neck in your final drawing, not the whole figure.
- Drawing pencils, erasers, and blending sticks will be provided for you to use on your final drawing. You will be expected to use these tools in creating your portrait.
- Final drawing is due on Thursday, April 21st along with your final Surreal Anatomy unit project.
- Sketchbook #5: draw four studies of your own features (all should be different). This can include eyes, nose, mouth, ears, or hands. SB #5 is due on Thursday, April 21st at the beginning of the period.
Unit 5: Figure Drawing (Beginning Art)
For this unit you will create your own superhero figure drawing.
- You can draw your superhero in any pose you want as long as you include the full figure.
- You must use realistic human proportions--use photo reference, the internet or ask your friends to pose.
- Give your superhero a theme: he/she does not need to be a "good superhero" or based on traditional superhero morals. You can approach this any way you would like. Some examples: Donut Man; Lazy Superwoman; Sahuaro Super Student; etc. Be creative! Do NOT use a superhero that already exists (Batman, Superman, Watchman, etc.).
- You can draw your superhero in any style or media that you feel comfortable with: pencil; charcoal; colored pencil; paint; etc.
- You will need to provide two rough sketches in your sketchbook that show two unique ideas for your superhero. You will be provided final paper after one idea has been approved.
- Sketchbook Assignment #4: you must complete four anatomy studies. You may choose any four muscles/bones that you would like. You may draw all four studies on the same page.
- Sketchbook #4 and Superhero Figure Drawing project are due Thursday, April 7th.
Unit 5: Figure Drawing (Intermediate Art)
For this unit you will create a surreal anatomy figure drawing.
- You must include a full figure that incorporates at least one surreal element (see picture examples below). Be creative--this can include basically anything!
- Your final artwork can be a drawing or painting, in any media that you feel comfortable with: pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, etc.
- You must present two unique ideas in your sketchbook before starting on the final artwork.
- Final artwork must be at least 8 x 11" in size.
- Final artwork is due Thursday, April 21st.
- Sketchbook Assignment #4: you must complete four anatomy studies of muscle or bones. You may choose whichever four muscles/bones you would like. All four can be drawn on the same page. Sketchbook #4 is due Thursday, April 7th.

Unit 2, Semester 2: Vans Custom Culture Contest 2016
You will be designing a custom pair of Vans shoes based on one of these four themes: art, music, action sports ("board or bike", which means skateboarding, longboarding, surfing, biking, etc., not football, soccer, etc.), and "local flavor."
- You will need to plan three unique designs and present them to me for review. You will select one final design to create as a final project.
- You may draw or paint the final design on paper or canvas (not the actual shoes yet).
- Every student will submit their project designs to be considered as a Final Design to be on the shoes themselves. The final designs will be voted on by every class. The artists for the final designs will form a committee that will execute the artwork.
- The final shoe design project is due on Thursday, February 11th.

Unit 1, Semester 2 Project & Sketchbook Assignment
- For this project, you will need to select one object (should be small or can be photographed). You will create a "tiled" drawing of this object, which should be comprised of at least six individual images of your object (see examples of project below).
- You must plan your project in your sketchbook before getting the final paper.
- You may use color or detailed shading in the final drawing.
- The final unit project will be due Thursday, January 21st at the beginning of the period.
- Sketchbook Assignment #2: you will need to watch one of your favorite movies or TV shows to complete this sketchbook assignment. Pause the movie or TV show during a scene that shows one (or more) of the rules of composition that we discussed and draw that scene. Make sure to fill the entire page. The sketchbook assignment will also be due on Thursday, January 21st at the beginning of class.

For this unit, you will create your own Dias de los Muertos inspired artwork. You can create a drawing, painting, or sculpture.
- You must complete a rough sketch in your sketchbook before you can work on the final version.
- If you are painting and wish to use canvas, make sure you pick one up for class.
- You may use the templates I copied for you, but do not simply copy them. You should change the decorative elements and incorporate imagery that has personal meaning to you.
- We are going to start focusing on giving our artwork personal meaning. You should add purposeful elements--your artwork can be about someone or something that is meaningful to you.
- On Monday and Tuesday when we first began this unit, we discussed the symbolism in Dias de los Muertos artwork. Choose one symbol (skulls/skeletons, marigolds, altars, Catrina, etc.) and use it to make a completed drawing in your sketchbook.
- Sketchbook assignments are due at the beginning of the period and are worth 10 points--this is a significant amount of credit over the quarter. Make sure you are getting them done and submitted on time.
Project Info for Week of October 19th-23rd, 2015
- Project: Draw a selected cartoon on provided paper. Must do one sketch in sketchbook to demonstrate knowledge of general shapes method. Your cartoon must fill the entire page.
- Sketchbook Assignment #7: complete a contour drawing of any subject matter; must fill the entire page. You should spend at least one hour of work on this assignment.
Genius Hour for Friday, October 23rd: You must have rough sketches prepared in your sketchbook to present to Ms. Gay. I should have a clear idea of the project you are working on--theme, subject matter, media, etc. I will ask you questions about it; be prepared to answer them in order to earn your points. This is a graded progress check during class time.

Unit 3 Project
You will be creating a Creative Color Wheel painting. Design an image that incorporates the color wheel (though it does not need to be in a “wheel” format—this is open to interpretation).
Project Requirements:
· You must show a rough sketch of your idea prior to beginning on the project.
· All primary, secondary, and tertiary colors must be present in the final design.
· You will be using acrylic paint. Wear clothes that won’t be the end of the world if you get paint on them (I have scrubs you can use to cover up with, but accidents still happen).
· You will be responsible for mixing all of the colors you need. I will only provide the primary colors, black, and white.
· I will provide paper to use for the final painting. However, if you would prefer to paint on a canvas or canvas panel, you will need to purchase one and bring it to class.
Project Due Date/In-class Critique: Thursday, September 17th, 2015

Progress Checks:
Every Friday, we will be focusing on our Genius Hour projects. You will choose your own project--it can be anything related to art. If you're having trouble thinking of something, here are some ideas to get you started:

- Create an artwork to submit to a gallery or to be part of an art show (I can help you research shows in Tucson--we have a lot of them)
- Experiment with digital art
- Re-design the Sahuaro logo
- Make and edit a video
- Design and paint a piece of furniture
- Paint a pair of Vans, chucks, etc.
Progress Checks:
- Purpose Statement (see artistic process file below for more information): Due Friday, September 11th, 2015
- Materials Check (must have all of your materials ready to begin in class): Friday, September 25th, 2015
