Genius Hour Spring 2017: Mixed Media Project
- On a canvas panel, you will design an image based on a single word or name. For example, “love,” “peace,” or use your own name, a name of a friend, family member, dog, etc.
- This is a mixed media project, which means you will be incorporating several different art styles and media into the finished product.
- Each Friday you will be expected to work on this project by adding another “component.”
- This project requires including each of the following ten components in relation to your chosen word in order to receive full points:
–A background
–Text (separate from the newspaper)
–A portrait (open media—can be drawn, painted, a photograph, printed, cut from a magazine, etc.)
–An object (same, any media)
–A drawn component
–A painted component, done in acrylic paint
–Free choice—any media (can add things in, like decoupage—think flowers, glitter, feathers, beads, etc.)
–A photograph that you took (must be taken during our quarter, not one from the past)
–An art history reference (use a style, image, etc.)
- Some of these have overlap. For example, a background means covering the whole canvas panel, but this could include using the newspaper as part of the background.
- You will be provided with a Component Checklist. You are expected to keep this form throughout the quarter, have it available for graded progress checks, and then submit it as part of your final project in March.
- You must complete the Project Proposal Form (file provided below) in order to receive supplies to begin working on the project.
- Supplies will be checked out to you and then returned upon completion of the presentation in March.
- Please review the PowerPoint file provided below for specifics and examples.

Genius Hour Final Requirements Fall 2016
1.Completed project, ready to be displayed (think art gallery level of finish)
NO SKETCHBOOKS SHOULD BE PART OF THIS. Many of you used sketches from your sketchbook to show what you were working on during the mid-semester presentations. For the final, this is not acceptable as the project unless your plan included using the sketchbook specifically as part of the final (for example, if you were making a comic).
2. Final Artist Statement
As part of your final Genius Hour project, you will need to type and electronically submit an Artist Statement. Use the following guidelines to write 1-2 paragraphs about your project. The more detail the better, so provide as much information as possible to get a good grade. The Artist Statement is worth 20% of your final Genius Hour project grade.
3. Presentation of work (all students)
Make sure you discuss each point during your presentation:
In addition to these three components, you will need to complete two critiques of classmates' work on the provided form. This is worth 10 points.
