Unit 1, Semester 2: Yarn Painting
We will begin our spring semester with an easier, fun project to get back into the flow of class. For this project, you will design an image using only yarn as your medium.
Sketchbook (SB) Assignment #1, Semester 2
- You will need to draw one rough draft of your project in your sketchbook. This project will take up about a half-paper size, so measure out your drawing accordingly.
- After I have checked your rough draft, you will receive a final paper to do your detailed final draft (which will be used as the transfer for the yarn painting). The final draft drawing should be completed by Wednesday, January 11th.
- Steps to create your yarn painting:
- Draw your image on regular drawing paper (will be provided)
- Transfer your image to a piece of cardboard (also provided)—we will review how to transfer the drawing to the cardboard
- Use white glue to adhere the yarn to the cardboard
- If you need any specialty yarn color, you may need to pick this up from an arts/crafts store. Most main colors will be provided in class.
- See project examples in the slideshow below. To review the PowerPoint we went over together in class on Monday, January 9th, please open the file below (above picture slideshow).
- The project is due at the end of the period on Thursday, January 19th.
Sketchbook (SB) Assignment #1, Semester 2
- Illustrate an image that shows one thing you did over your winter break.
- Artwork should be either colored or drawn in detail (shading, small detail, etc.; or do both detail and coloring)
- Sketchbook Assignments should reflect one hour of effort and will be graded as such.
- All sketchbook assignments must fill the entire sketchbook page or points will be deducted.
- SB #1 is due at the beginning of the period on Thursday, January 19th.

Fall 2016 Semester
Unit 10: Exquisite Corpse Group Project
- In a group of no more than 4 people, create an artwork based on the Exquisite Corpse activity done during class on Monday, December 12th. You can use any media (pencil, charcoal, watercolor, ink, etc.) and are encouraged to be creative (and a little weird).
- Use the provided copy paper (8.5 x 11" size) to make your group rough draft. When you finish your rough draft, show it to Ms. Gay to get your final LARGE paper.
- This project is due at the end of the period on Thursday, December 15th.
- Do exactly what we did at the beginning of class on Monday—work with two other people to create an exquisite corpse drawing in your sketchbook
- Can work with your classmates, family, friends, etc.
- Label who did each part
- Due at the beginning of the period on Thursday, December 15th
- Due to the last day of the semester being one week from the due date for SB #8, the last day to turn in this assignment for credit will be Wednesday, December 21st, in order to have enough time to complete grading.
Bonus Project: Doodle 4 Google
- Using the “Google” letters/logo, design them to reflect the theme of “What I See for the Future…”
- Must include G-o-o-g-l-e
- Final design must be colored and/or use detail/shading
- I will provide you the paper to draw on to use as your rough sketch, then show me to receive nice quality drawing paper for the final
- Search “doodle 4 google” to see all past entries and get some ideas…they are really cool!
- This project will have special grading…I’ll tell you how it works on the due date
- Final due at the end of the period on December 8th, 2016
- Here are some topics/people who could inspire your drawing:
- Pressing issues for your generation: food, global warming, sustainable energy, space exploration, computers, technology, video games, travel, medicine, art, fashion, aliens, culture, war
- Influential people: politicians, scientists, artists, doctors, young people who are “up and coming” (think leaders at your school or other young people from your generation who are trying to make a difference)
Unit 9: Watercolor Painting
On Monday, November 28th, we learned four basic watercolor techniques in class. The four techniques are: wet-on-wet, salt-on-wet, color gradient, and crayon resist. See slideshow below for examples.
- You will need to keep all four watercolor technique cards you made on Monday and tape them into your sketchbook as a "reference page." This will be graded (show Ms. Gay in class).
- Unit project: design a watercolor painting that incorporates all four watercolor techniques you learned in class on Monday. You will need to complete one rough sketch in your sketchbook (use pencil, not watercolor) to receive final watercolor paper to complete this project.
- The final watercolor painting is due at the end of the period on Thursday, December 1st.
- Sketchbook Assignment #7: Free draw, any school-appropriate subject matter, and any art media. Use color and/or detail, should look like at least an hour's worth of effort. Due at the beginning of the period on Thursday, December 1st.
- This sketchbook assignment can only be turned in for partial credit up until Thursday, December 8th. After this date it will not be accepted for credit.
Unit 8: Street Art
On Monday, November 14th we learned about the street art of Shepard Fairey and Banksy (PowerPoint file is available for review below). Based on the videos, topics we covered, and artwork we looked at, for this project:
- Create your own street art image
- Can be in any street art style and use text and/or imagery
- Consider: this is an image you want to perpetuate. What is something that you can give meaning to (can be personal, societal, etc.) that you would want others to see?
- Due on Thursday, November 17th at the end of the period
- Sketchbook Assignment #6: research a street artist and create an image using their style.
- This is due on Thursday, November 17th at the beginning of the period.
- Some suggestions for street artists:
- Banksy
- Keith Haring
- Invader
- SAMO
- Jean Michel Basquiat
- Swoon
- Andre/Mr. A
- Above
- Mr. Brainwash

Unit 7: Composition & Charcoal Drawing
For this project you will create a series of three charcoal drawings based on an origami sculpture that you create.
Sketchbook #5
Please review the following two PowerPoint files on composition and charcoal drawing if you need help or were absent.
- I will provide some simple origami tutorials that you can use for this project, or you can find your own (look online, use a book, etc.).
- In planning for this project, observe your origami sculpture from different angles to find the best composition for each of your drawings. Draw a rough sketch of all 3 compositions in your sketchbook and show me for approval. This is how you will get your final paper.
- All three drawings will need to be done on provided square paper and mounted on a larger paper to be considered complete.
- For the three drawings you will need to create one of each:
- One regular charcoal drawn on white paper
- One regular charcoal & white charcoal drawn on brown butcher paper
- One white charcoal drawn on black paper
- The final project is due on Thursday, November 10th at the beginning of the period.
Sketchbook #5
- Watch your favorite movie or TV show. Find a scene that exemplifies one of the rules of composition that we studied.
- Draw the scene to fit your entire sketchbook page.
- On the back, write which rule of composition your image is following.
- This sketchbook assignment is due on Thursday, November 10th at the beginning of the period.
- Remember, I gave you a half-sheet with all of your sketchbook assignments listed on it for this quarter. If you forget what you need to do, refer to this sheet.

Unit 6: Dias de los Muertos Sugar Skull Project
For this project, you will make your own sugar skulls. You will be making two for a grade.
- You will need to plan the design for each in your sketchbook (total of two designs, can be drawn on the same page).
- On Monday, October 24th, we will be molding our sugar skulls out of real sugar. Your attendance for this week is imperative! If you are absent, you will lose out on making your sugar skulls.
- We will be finished making the sugar skulls and will have our class critique on Thursday, October 27th. After they have been graded and critiqued, you may take them home (preferably on Friday so that they have enough time to completely dry out).
- Bring things you can add on to personalize your sugar skull--feathers, beads, sprinkles, glitter, etc. Think outside of the box, and visit a craft store to get some inspiration for your designs.
- Spend some time researching how to make the sugar skulls and ideas for how you want to decorate them. I highly recommend learning some basic cake decorating techniques as this will help you when using the icing on your sugar skulls.
- Sketchbook Assignment #4: create an image based on one of the symbols of Dias de los Muertos that we discussed in class: Calaveras, altars, ofrendas, marigolds, or Catrina/Catrin. Draw large to fill the page. Your drawing should reflect at least one hour of effort. This is due at the beginning of the period on Thursday, October 27th.
- Website resources: Thaneeya's website, has great photos and explanation of how to make sugar skulls; or go to this website to learn about the process--it has a lot of good tips for decorating and videos that show how to make a sugar skull.
- Look through the PowerPoint from class on Monday, October 17th to review everything you need to know for the project.

Unit 5: Return of the Coloring Pages
For this unit, you will receive a copy of your original Tucson/Sahuaro H.S. themed coloring page that you drew, and a copy of someone else's coloring page from a different class. For each coloring page, focus on one color pencil technique we covered at the beginning of the semester: varying pressure, layering (same color/different colors), blending, hatching/cross-hatching, or burnishing.
Both completed coloring pages are due on Thursday, September 29th at the end of the period.
This is our last official project of 1st quarter!

Unit 3 Project
You will be creating a Creative Color Wheel acrylic painting. Design an image that incorporates all of the colors of the color wheel (though it does not need to be in a “wheel” format—this is open to interpretation).
•Project Requirements:
•You must show a rough sketch of your idea prior to beginning on the project.
•Use a full page in your sketchbook and use color pencils to indicate where all 12 colors of the color wheel will go.
•Rough draft must be done no later than Friday, September 2nd in order to paint on Tuesday, September 6th. (No school Monday, September 5th for Labor Day)
•All primary, secondary, and tertiary colors must be present in the final design.
•You will be using acrylic paint. Wear clothes that won’t be the end of the world if you get paint on them (I have scrubs you can use to cover up with, but accidents still happen).
•You will be responsible for mixing all of the colors you need. I will only provide the primary colors, black, and white.
•I will provide paper to use for the final painting. However, if you would prefer to paint on a canvas or canvas panel, you will need to purchase one and bring it to class.
Project Due Date/In-class Critique: TBA--you will have all of next week to paint though; the final project will likely be due on or after Monday, September 12th.
See project examples in the slide show below.
